BSIA section highlights the benefits of access control technology Read On... February 01 2010
Following the British Security Industry Association's (BSIA) recent research into crime in the recession, the Association's Access Control Section is highlighting the benefits that users can gain from access control technology.
The BSIA's research revealed that security remains a key investment for UK plc despite the difficult economic climate with 92% of respondents retaining the same level of investment. In a summary report of the research findings, access control was featured as a popular security measure among the respondents.
BSIA Access Control Section Chairman, Mike Sussman, comments: "The research report makes for interesting reading and whilst it is encouraging that 83% of respondents haven’t seen an increase in crime or fear an increase, it is worth noting that 14% of respondents are looking to invest in access control as a security measure in the near future and 56% of respondents have an access control system in place at present to provide security."
"There are many benefits of using an access control system. Increased security and point of entry to sites, buildings and rooms are the obvious ones but there is also visitor monitoring, automatic number plate recognition, integrated security and increased bottom line through operational efficiencies that makes the technology worthwhile."

Prevent Identity Theft on Social Networks Read On... January 28 2010
Social networking sites have become easy prey for identity thieves. But don't worry; specialist website identitytheftfixes.com has got some tips to keep you safe while you socially network! Learn how identity theft occurs with networking sites and ways to prevent identity theft from happening to you.
The work is being done and the word is getting out
Researchers at Worcester Polytechnic Institute studied 12 social networking sites and their practices regarding their users. The 12 sites studied were Bobo, Digg, Facebook, Friendster, Hi, Imeem, LinkedIn, LiveJournal, MySpace, Orkut, Twitter, Xanga.
From this study, the researchers learned that social networks are leaking user's personal information to third-party tracking sites. Personal information is information that traces an individual's identity either alone or combined with other public information.
How do thieves get your personal information?
So, you're wondering, how exactly do identity thieves steal your personal information from your Facebook or Myspace page? That is a common question and one that's not too obvious to people who aren't computer nerds.
Research shows that the networking sites tag each user in order to access the user's personal profile -- necessary for the operation of the site. The problem comes in when third-party tracking sites obtain the user's tag and tracks the user.
This happens quite easily when a social networking site communicates with third party tracking sites through banners placed on the user's screen; this also communicates the users tag. The third party now has the user's tag and access to their personal profile.
How can you prevent this from happening to you?
To prevent identity theft, follow these tips:
-- Limit the amount of personal information you put on your profile.
-- Only list information that is necessary to socialize with your friends.
-- Don't list personal information like your home address, phone number, or birthday
-- Use the network's privacy controls
-- Restrict your personal information only to your closest friends
-- Use browser security to refuse third party cookies
According to Consumer's Reports, approximately 13% of social networking site users have had some violation of their personal information. Take steps to prevent identity theft by following the tips above. Your social networking site should be fun; keep it that way and prevent identity theft.

CCTV is money well spent says BSIA Read On... January 25 2010
Public spending on CCTV is worthwhile to secure public safety, is the response of the British Security Industry Association (BSIA) to a recent online report highlighting concerns over the rise in the number of CCTV cameras controlled by local councils over the past decade.
In its report, published in December, Big Brother Watch - an offshoot of the Taxpayers' Alliance - questions the effectiveness of CCTV in deterring or solving crimes, an inaccurate assessment according to Pauline Norstrom, BSIA CCTV Section Chairman.
Pauline comments Thankfully the reality of CCTV in Britain is not the doom-laden picture that is painted by this report. Time and again the police take advantage of CCTV images to reconstruct events, identify offenders and make high-profile calls for public support in their enquiries.

Union and Yale locks to inherit Chubb locks heritage Read On... November 13 2009 An important change to the future of the Chubb locks brand in 2010 has been announced by ASSA ABLOY and Locksonline is now working closely with them to make sure customers are reassured and kept fully informed In a move that may surprise many customers, the Chubb brand will be replaced by other leading ASSA ABLOY brands on most locks and secondary security products by August 2010. However ASSA ABLOY is stressing that the locks will continue to be manufactured and readily available and only the name will change. The news comes following the end of negotiations over licensing agreements between ASSA ABLOY and UTC, the American multinational that owns the Chubb brand. UTC is well known for its fire safety and manned guarding business, which also uses the Chubb brand, and took the strategic decision not to renew the agreement with ASSA ABLOY. ASSA ABLOY manufactures and sells locks branded as Chubb under two UTC licenses. The first started in 2000 and was for 10 years, expiring in 2010. This covers the majority of Chubb branded products sold by ASSA ABLOY. The second licence is for specific custodial products and will not expire until 2100. There is a special website at Chubb At Heart which will have the latest news and there is also a video answering the main questions on the same site or visit ASSA ABLOY and click on the Chubb logo on the home page.
