Era advices people to check their insurance
policy documents to ensure that their levels
of home security would enable them to make
a full claim in the unfortunate event of
being burgled.
A recent, high profile, case has shown
that it can be something very simple, like
windows without locks, which can make all
the difference to the outcome of a claim.
Dave Hill, Era’s director and general
manager, says “Being burgled is one
of the worst things that can happen to you.
Finding out that your insurance is invalid
because simple security measures have not
been taken would be too much for most of
us to bear.”
Hill continues “If you find that
the level of your home security would not
satisfy your insurance company then remedial
action can be taken quickly. Most high quality
locks for windows and doors are easily available,
modestly priced and easy to fit. So check
the small print today and make sure you
don’t get caught out.”
A further advantage of having suitable
home security is that many insurance companies
will offer a discount on premiums. The Association
of British Insurers advises that key operated
locks should be fitted to all accessible
windows. In particular, those on the ground
floor or those that could be reached by
a near drainpipe or the flat roof of a porch
or adjacent building.
For doors the ABI recommends;
• Outside doors should have deadlocks
that at least conform to BS3621. These locks
can only be opened by a key
• Doors that usually lock from the
inside (e.g. the back door) should also
be fitted with bolts.
• Sliding patio doors should have
additional security locks fitted to prevent
the sliding frame being lifted off the tracks.
