Are you up to standard?
BS 3621:2004
Lots of customers calling us confused in regards to the changes to the well-known and highly regarded
BS 3621. Here is our simplified guide.
What's Happened?
BS 3621 has been upgraded to coincide with the introduction of European lock standard. It is one of the most publicised British standards and one which all insurance companies use to state which locks they require their policy holders to have fitted to their external doors.
Main changes for compliant locks:-
- 20mm bolt throws
- Latch operation with 10 Newtons sideload
- 40N follower force
- 25N closing force
How Does This Effect You?
The Fact that the old standard is being maintained with a New Year reference makes it easier for retailers, wholesalers, builders merchants, locksmiths and architectural ironmongers to change over without additional costs.
It is not expected that already fitted locks, meeting previous BS 3621 standards will require change at the request of insurance companies. Manufacturers stopped making locks to the old standards as of the 6th of December.
Supplies of Locks that meet the old standard will take many years to be completely phased out. It is recommended that you check with your insurance company.
