remotelock smart lock integrationsThis incredible WiFi Smart Lock can work both independently or can be integrated to AirBnB, HomeAway, Guesty, August and more!

There are two UK solutions in the RemoteLock range, here we have the latest 3i WiFi SmartLock - a self-contained smart lock for a wooden door - and then there's also the Access Controller System, which is a control unit designed to manage up to two doors of any kind, with their own electric locking solutions.   But on this page, we'll be looking at the SmartLock solution.  If you're more interested in the control system, please click here to view the RemoteLock ACS Smart Controller.

Standalone Technology

In its simplest form, once you've installed the smart lock onto your door, you can then control access via unique PIN codes (between 4 and 8 digits long); which you can add, delete, and modify via the RemoteLock Portal, either by logging in via your home computer or laptop, or you can even do this on-the-go via an app on your smartphone or tablet.

Even though this system sits right at home with online booking portals (see 'Integrated Technology' below), it is also a very capable system for anyone that wishes to allow temporary access via a code to a room or building.  This could be for Gym membership where a member has paid for a months training, and after the term has expired you can ensure that the member's code expires at the same time.  Perhaps you have a dog walking area where customers may book in to walk their dogs in a safe environment, this is ideal as you can simply pop onto the portal or the app and set up a timed access code for them to work for the period of time they have booked for.

Perhaps you have a delivery due one afternoon, create a code on the fly and give it to the delivery driver. Know full well that after the time has expired the code will not work.

Other features like being able to toggle the 3i lock into passage mode (free access) via the app or unlock the door to allow someone in who may be at the door at the time can all be done via the app on your phone or the web portal.

Integrated Technology

remotelock integrations

In its wider scope of functionality, RemoteLock have very cleverly designed this smart lock for full integration into the likes of AirBnB, HomeAway, Guesty and so on.  If you're planning on using this for one of these on a rental property using any of these systems, or think you may want to in the future, then it really could not be simpler.  Through the RemoteLock portal you simply choose the system you want to integrate to (let's say AirBnB for example), and this will take you to AirBnB's login authentication page, which checks to make sure you want to integrate the lock with your account and takes you through the quick verification process.

Once integration is completed, the portal will then receive instant notifications from from AirBnB whenever a guest confirms their booking, containing the necessary information for generating an access code.  When this notification is received, the RemoteLock system will automatically generate a code for the duration of their stay, and send this code through to the AirBnB portal.  From here, AirBnB's systems would handle the rest.*1

RemoteLock Portal

The online web portal and smartphone app gives administrators an audit trail of activations, false tries and connectivity information to each device listed.  In the case of AirBnB or similar integrations, this means if you're waiting for a guest to arrive you can set up the system to email you or simply look at this audit trail to see if the guest has used their code yet. This also gives you the ability to know who has been in the property at different times, should you ever need to know this.

And of course, in addition to these useful reporting features, you have the ability to control and configure the smart lock remotely, and add/delete/modify users on the system to grant or revoke access, as well as limit access based on times and dates etc.

Door / Lock Suitability

Mounting the RemoteLock Smart LockThe SmartLock is designed primarily for wooden doors, and comes with two latches for retrofitting existing holes at 60mm and 70mm backsets.  And of course this comes with several sets of fixings as well, for 35mm and 45mm doors, and then adjustable fixings for doors exceeding 45mm, up to a maximum of around 60mm (ideal for 54mm thick composite doors for example).

It is also worth noting, that if you want additional security on the door, for example the ability to deadlock the door during certain times of the year where you don't want any form of access to anyone with a code, you can swap out the supplied latches for a sashlock if you wish - just make sure everything's going to fit!  We have a sashlock offering in the options which will work if you want this option.

Now if you do have a composite door, or indeed a wooden door with a multipoint lock, you can still use these but there are some conditions to this:
~ Firstly, you'd need at least a 45mm backset on the door - the unit is 63mm wide, so this means a 'half' measurement of 31.5mm, which means it would not fit a 35mm backset lock, as it would end up hitting the frame and preventing the door closing.   So in most cases a 45mm backset would be ok, assuming the lip on the frame did not exceed 10mm, if it does, you'll need an even greater backset.
~ Secondly, the multipoint lock would need to be a slam-lock, which in basic terms means it triggers the locking points to automatically fire when the door closes - as these handles wont give you the lift-to-lock functionality of a typical multipoint lock - so it needs to be a slam-action automatic lock.
~ And finally, be mindful of the fixing centres in relation to the follower position on the centre gearbox.  The top fixing sits 129mm above the follower, which would clear most centre gearboxes completely, however the bottom fixing screw sits just 23mm below the follower, so there needs to be a hole through the gearbox to allow for this fixing point - the GU Automatic Slam-Lock accommodates this and is an automatic locking multipoint, so is therefore considered to be a good solution for this.

Ongoing Costs

There are fees to pay in order to use this system*2, and depending on the level of functionality required, there are tiers of rates depending on the features you need in order to minimise costs for those who do not require things such as online booking integrations.  At the time of writing this the cost of each Smart Lock is less than £1.00 a month (less than £12.00 a year) to have the basic functions of the system. As you move up through the features the cost naturally increases.  For full transparency, we've put together a chart of rates correct at the time of writing this, which is shown below.
