Hi, guys. My name is Darrel and I am head of the tech team here at LocksOnline.co.uk and thanks for taking some time to tune in and have a look at one of our product review videos.
The product that we have here in front of us today is the T5200. It's an electric spindle. Now, what's really great about this particular device is little bit of ingenuity has come into this and let say for an example you've already got a sash know, a set of lever handles that are on your door and your wanting to put access control on that door as well. So you want a key pad to get in or push a button to get out or any form of access control. One of the biggest killers is what lock suits your particular door and that has always been a head scratching point with a lot of people who fit access control solutions. Mostly they end up just fitting a magnet on the top of the door which might not be the ideal solution.
So this little device is really great because inside your lock or your latch or your sash lock inside your door. What you will have is where the handles operate is that will draw back a latch. If you take that apart what you'll have in the centre is what we call a spindle and you take that spindle away and you replace it with this particular device here, okay, then what this does is allows the handle on the inside to work like normal. Every single time you get in and out, you operate it like that. But on the outside you can actually electrically operate it. So from the outside if it wasn't energised, you just pop the handle down and it would do nothing. This would turn like that. Okay. So it wouldn't actually do anything. All right.
When you apply power to it via this lead here, this engages and allows you to then operate the handle that is on the outside. Now, this is operating the latch upper lock and it may be a sash lock or a dead lock or whatever because you would then dead lock the door for additional security. Treat this as being passive security. You just don't want people walking in wilfully. All right.
What it does do is it means that you don't need to mess around with the existing locks or doors furniture that is already on the door, or if you want a stylish bit of furniture or stylish handle or something like that, we've now got a solution where you can still keep all of that and have an access control solution on the door as well. It's a fantastic innovative product in that respect.
What I was going to show you is that this is a typical sash lock here. You might be familiar with it. This one here takes a cylinder, either an oval or a euro, but you might have a key hole normally on the outside and the inside you have a set of handles. The cylinder here would dead lock the door like normal. This is what a sash lock does. The deadlocking part is the bottom. But at the top here is the handle part. That keeps the door closed.
If you disengage the handle on the outside, then this particular latch becomes your passive security. So operating the latch on the outside, this isn't going to go backwards and forwards. So therefore, that is your security when the electric spindle engages, then the handle will work and it will work for a predetermined time depending on the access control solution. So that is the principle behind the operation.
The way that it would actually be wired is that it would fit in and if I could get that in there for two secs. If I push that in there like that, whoops, let me get that in there, two sets, and I would feed that through there like that, okay, and that would then sit there like that. This cable would then go off to the back and you drill a hole through the door and all the way through the centre of the door through the door frame, so that is the way that would work. Your handle on the inside would be connected on here and you turn your handle like that, no problem at all, but on this side if you try and turn it, it's not going to do anything. That is until you apply power to it.
Now, once you've got that fitted in there, it comes with a sir clip here and you use the sir clip then in there to allow this lock to move backwards and forwards, okay, so that is the reason for the sir clip. It also comes with another additional tool, and this particular tool is a little follower, for want of a better reason, and the idea of this follower is that you'll put your drill in there that will allow you to cut a hole because this is going to have to sit here. This is the actual gear box for the mechanism and you're going to have to cut a bigger hole there.
If it's the first time you're doing it and the lock is already fitted, then this helps you as a guide to make sure that your hole is nice and true. There is a little bit of thought put in there from the manufacturers. So, the way that it actually works is if I pull that back of there and I was to connect some power on here. This is just a 12 volt battery. It's from 12 volt. It works from 6 volt to 12 volt, AC or DC, so it's really great and it will work with the likes of door intercom systems as well which is really good to know.
So if I connect that on there, then at this moment in time that in free turn as you can see that, no problem. If I was to apply power to it. I will see if I can apply power to it and hold it at the same time. See if I can put that on there, here we go, and now I've applied power to it and I'll hold that there like that and now it's engaged there. While it's got power it's engaged. There you go.
That's the principle. That's the operation. I'm just messing around here with a handle and a lock case and a battery just to give you guys some sort of idea. Of course once it's fitted into the door, it's going to be hidden and it's going to be discrete and nobody is going to even know that it is there. So it is a little bit gadgety. It's a little bit techy here with me playing around with it and playing with batteries, etc. It might be slightly unprofessional but at least it gives you the idea of how the actual device works and the principle of its operation.
I'm quite excited about this product because I know one of the stumbling blocks for access control is what type of lock do you need to fit on the door. If you already got a sash lock or a latch or something, now you just need to fit that and that is it. You've got access control. It is as easy as that.
