Oval Cylinder Locks
Oval cylinders are a less prevalent profile of locking cylinder in the UK, but can still be found particularly in commercial settings from older installations. They are used in conjunction with an appropriate oval-profile mortice locks.
Oval profile cylinders come in different configurations in the same way Euro cylinders do, you can have key-operation on both sides (standard double-oval), as well as key operation on one side with a handy thumb-turn on the inside known as a key & turn oval cylinder, for quick and convenient keyless operation. Like most cylinders, they are also available as 'half' or 'single' ovals, which are designed to only be operated on one side via key.
The oval-profile is visually identified by its oval shape. This sounds obvious but then you must also acknowledge that there are different oval profiles available, and this makes a big difference! The primary focus here, and the most popular of all the oval cylinders in the UK, is the 'standard' oval, which is
These standard oval cylinders are 18x31mm (18mm wide, 31mm tall). If you have a chunkier oval cylinder with bolt-through fixings, you should look at our Scandinavian Oval Cylinders Range. If you have a much smaller size oval than this, you may have a Cisa Mini-Oval Cylinder, or perhaps an Oval Bullet Lock.
Once you've clarified the type of oval you need, and are satisfied that you have a typical 18x31 oval, then all you need to consider is the type (key both sides, key & turn, or single sided as detailed above), and the size of the cylinder in terms of its length. Unlike Euro Profile cylinders, Ovals tend to be equal lengths on both sides, so there's usually no offset to worry about, so measurements will be typically 62mm, 72mm or 82mm overall (with an equal split, meaning 31x31, 36x36, or 41x41).
