Hi guys, my name is Darrel, and I'm head of the tech team here at
locksonline.co.uk. Today we're doing product reviews, but more importantly,
we're going to be doing a review of the Union oval cylinders. This is
typically a Union oval cylinder. Let me give you a little bit of an insight
in regards to oval cylinders.
Many, many years ago, probably back in the '70s and so forth, the European
countries were looking at the Euro type cylinder, which you see mostly in
UPVC door locks. In the UK, they decided to go with this oval shape, which
is completely a different shape to what you find with the Euros, which look
like a big keyhole. To be honest with you, it didn't really grab that much
attraction in the UK, and over 10, 15 years and so forth, they were being
mass produced and were fitted into the locks in the country, etc.
They've started to phase them out now. There's not often you see locks
being fitted now with this particular style of cylinder. We can still get
lock cases that do oval, and of course we can still get the cylinders, but
it's not really the trend at this moment in time compared to Euro. This
particular cylinder here has a measurement, and the way you measure these,
it's always from the centre out to there, and from the centre to there.
This particular one is a 35x35 mm, which is designed for a door that's 44
mm thick. The reason why it projects out a little bit more on either side,
is that you can at least then [prime the scratching area], or a rosette
around it, to tidy up the finishing of the door. This is the typical size
you would consider on a 44 mm thick door, which is the standard size for
external doors in the UK. Now to measure it, if I was to actually get a
ruler, I'm measuring out there, and that is 36 mm. It's 35x35. Some are
slightly oversized and some are slightly undersized, but traditionally in
the UK a 35x35 it would be called.
Now these standard come with 3 keys, and we can get these as well keyed
alike to sets, so under special orders, get a master keyed as well. Now one
thing you might want to bear in mind is a message from my history as being
a locksmith. The size of the screw hole there that holds these, in the
olden days - I say the olden days, but when they first came out, the size
of the thread here was a lot smaller than what it is now. There came a
transition, I think probably about the middle '80s, where they started to
have this cylinder became a universal size. It is now a standard size of 5
mm thread there, metric thread.
You may find that if you're taking cylinders out that are very old, back in
the old doors and so forth, you may find that you've got the
smaller size thread there. It's very important to make sure that you
actually get a new screw with it if you've got the old size. Now it doesn't
come as standard with a screw, so it might be well worth you checking,
having a chat with us, or giving us a call to make sure that that is the
case, that you've got the old size.
So there you go, there's not really that much to say about our oval
cylinder, other than what I've already said. This particular range come in
either a stainless steel finish, or a silver sort of finish, or a brass
finish. These are the Union oval range of cylinders, designed for mortice
locks indoors, etc.
I appreciate your time, I hope this little video has given you a considered
opinion, and learned you a bit more about oval cylinders in a bit more
detail. If you need any more further advice, feel free to give us an email,
or pop online, or pick up the phone and phone us. 0845 230 02 01.
Appreciate your time, and thank you very much for taking the time to have a
look at this video. Bye now.
