Hi, guys. My name is Darrel and I'm the head of the tech team here at LocksOnline.com.uk. Thanks for taking some time to tune in and have a look at one of our product review videos.
Today we're talking about knob sets. Probably more familiar in America, knob sets are, than the UK but they were quite prevalent in our country going back around the ‘70s and early ‘80s. This particular knob set is what we would call in the trade as the passage knob set. It's designed to be on doors that technically don't need to be locked. And this particular style here, as you can see here, is what we call in the industry is the Troy range. Now there are basically two different styles now that are predominantly dominant in the UK. There's either the Troy range, which is your standard round knob there like that, or the Beverly range, which we also do, which is more of a tapered, cylindrical sort of style.
The difference between a passage set as, you can see here, is effectively it doesn't have a locking facility. It's just basically just a latch to hold the door into the frame. So you would probably use these on bedrooms or joining doors, say your living room door or something like that, or kitchen door where you don't need to actually physically lock them. Now the actual latches themselves, this is the actual latch. They have the ability to be altered in regards to the backset. As this is in this moment in time, it's 60mm, as you can see here. If I was to lift this little lever up and push it over like that and drop it down, I've actually moved this back another 10mm to allow this to have a 70mm backset. The distance from the leading edge here to the centre of where the actual handle is going to sit on the door and you're going to adjust that quite simply by doing that as standard.
Now there's no security, again. There's no deadlocking stable or anything on this particular latch. There's absolutely no need for it to be there. Here's the actual keep. This is the part that would actually go onto the frame and you would cut that out there and then of course that would sit in there nice and tidy like that. It comes standard with some fixing screws, as you can see here. It also has the ability as well of being able to fit on doors with a maximum thickness there of around about the 45, 46mm. I won't be going any more than that, otherwise the screws are not going to be able to get fitted in there.
One of the distinct advantages as well is to establish what the diameter of this particular turn is. If I can do that for you, I'll do it with a gurney gauge. Bear with me. Let me switch that on. Because if you're thinking of retrofitting one of these or you're trying to replace it, it's well worth knowing the overall diameter of this. It's 66mm. So that's the actual diameter and the fixing centres there, if I can just go in there to find out those fixing centres for you, we're talking round about 42mm fixing centres between the two screws there.
Now one thing you need to bear in mind is that Beverly and Weiser and Troy used to have a different centre compared to the one that you see here. This one here is like a dog shaped. You may, if you are thinking of replacing this, you may have a white square spindle follower hole in there instead. So it's important to know the new style will not retrofit with the old style latches. Okay? You need to actually look at getting this particular style of latch as well.
I don't think that there's much more that I can say. They're obviously available in brass, as you can see. They're also available in satin chrome. And of course, they're available on our site.
