Hi, guys. My name's Daryl. I'm head of the tech team here, at
LocksOnline.co.uk reviews, and today we're doing some product reviews. And
importantly, the product that we have in front of us today is the range of
Era, door hinge bolt.
So here's the picture here of them. It's the 740. I don't know if you can
there for us. I've got the product down here on the table, already taken
out of the case. But it's the door hinge bolts.
Now to give you some sort of idea as to what hinge bolts are used for, if
you've got an outward opening door, like a french set of doors in the UK, a
part of your doors, etc, that open up, the problem is that the hinges are
also on the outside, and that makes them exposed. So any would-be burglars
that decided to walk around with a grinder or similar sort of tool is going
to attack those hinges. And if they can take the hinge away, you cut the
hinge off, etc, that allows them to open the door from the opposite side,
off the actual lock. So the lock wouldn't be at all secured and you could
have the highest security lock available, but if your hinge side is
exposed, you could just open the door from the opposite direction.
So the idea of hinge bolts is that you've got an outward opening door, and
you've got the hinges exposed, then you would use hinge bolts and if the
hinge were attacked, it still wouldn't allow the door to open.
So this is Era. Most lock manufacturers make a range of hinge bolts, and
this is Era's version of their hinge bolt. So let's have a look at the
actual bolt in a little bit more detail.
This is the actual keep, and these are what you would fit onto the frame.
So what you would do is, just below the top hinge, you would recess that
into the frame, and you'd drill yourself a hole in that size there, into
the frame. And the idea is then that you use the bolts here and you would
drill this particular bolt, then you would drill this all into the door, so
this particular part here, is exposed. So you would drill a hole, and you
would use a hammer then, and tap these in. And the idea is then, is that
when that's on the frame, and this is in the door, the idea is, when the
door is closed, this will actually set down inside the keep like that, into
the frame. So if your hinges were attacked, then this here isn't going to
allow your door to open from the inside.
Now you'll probably find that this is a prerequisite of insurances, but if
your doors open outwards, you should, by rights, be having hinge bolts on
them. So without further ado, let's get some measurements of the Era hinge
bolt for you, to see whether or not these will actually fit on your door.
I've got my gauge here now, and we've got some measurements. So the overall
measurement here, of this particular bolt, is 48 millimeters. The diameter
of this particular part here is 12 millimeters. The size of the piece that
would actually be put into the door is 10.3 mil, so you'd probably be
looking at drilling something in the region of maybe, a 10-mil or slightly
under 10 millimeter-size hole. The depth of the hole that would need to
consider drilling, if I can get a measurement (?) right about an inch here,
and there's about 30 millimeters. That's the hinge bolt guide. This is the
actually keep then, that sits into the frame, and this has got a width of
29 millimeters, and goth here of, um, 51 millimeters , and it's got then,
the centre for your screw fixings, it's around about 30, 39 militarizes.
The size of the hole there, if I get the measurement there for you, the
width of that hole is 19. millimeters, and then the height of the whole is
literally just get that1 5 millimeters So there you go.
This is the Era 740, hinge bolt, available now from locksonline.co.UK. I'm
hoping this little video of a couple minutes had you understand what hinge
bolts are for, and whether or not this particular type of bolt would be
suitable for your wooden door. l But if you need , or further advise or
