Hi guys. My name is Darrel and I'm head of the tech team here at LocksOnline. Thanks for taking some time to tune in and have a quick look at one of our product review videos. Now we're putting these short little videos together to be able to give you, our customers, the opportunity to see the products that we have to offer in, hopefully, a little bit more detail, or in the flesh, so to speak.

So today I want to show you a replaceable gear box. It's part of the Era range of multipoint locks that we have available on our website. In most cases, when you're looking at multipoint locks either it be in UPVC or composite doors, etc., what seems to go is the part that's in the centre. That kind of takes all the abuse of lifting handles and dropping handles, etc., and turning the key.

So invariably that's the particular part that may fail first in regards to the whole locking solution. So what manufacturers have done is they've allowed the actual part that sits in the centre, like this particular one here manufactured by Era, to allow you to be able to just change this particular part and get your locking solution back working in a tip top condition.

Now there's a few distinct features that this particular type of centre lock case has. So, for an example, you can actually withdraw the latch via the key. So you can put the key in. This is a typical cylinder here. And if I was to pop that in there like that and operate that, as you can see, I can withdraw the latch via the key. So if from the outside you wanted to be able to not have a handle and you wanted to be able to do it with just a key like that of a Yale door, like a wooden door that we're more familiar with, then you can do that operation there and no problem at all. So that's just one of the advantages with that particular setup there.

Another distinct advantage with this particular gear box, as well, is that it has a split spindle in the centre here. So what that means is, it allows you from either side to be able to deadlock the door and I can operate the deadlocking functionality by operating that there like that and lifting that up that there. Now what would have happened there ordinarily, is the bolt would have come out and these pinions here would have moved up and thrown the bolts out at the bottom and at the top of the door also.

And then consequently, you can then lock your door with your key. But because it has a split spindle arrangement, what it does mean is that you can deadlock it by lifting the handle on the outside, but you cannot drop the latch down from outside. So lift up to lock, turn the key in, and then what you would need to do to unlock it, is you put the key in, unlock it, drop the handle down, and then use the key then to continue with the latch and allow yourself in. So that's the difference with this particular type of locking solution.

Now one of the distinct advantages of that particular type of setup, is that this particular gear box and its features, etc., can be used in access controls solutions, where you might want to use a strike release, just on this latch here, and therefore then have a key from the outside to get in. But from the inside to get out, you just drop the handle and out you go. So this particular lock has that functionality and that features in respect to that.

Now it comes in two different size backsets there. This is the 45 mm backset, which is more indicative to a composite door. But it also is available in a 35 mm backset, which is more, again, more indicative in regards to a UPVC door.

The standard PZs, there is 92 mm. So from the distance from your handle to the centre of the cylinder there, which is a PZ measurement, that there is 92.

The backset is measured from the faceplate to the actual centre of the spindle or the centre of the cylinder, and by the time you put the fixings and all on here, the plate on here, that in this particular case will be 45 mm.

Now to give you some sort of idea in regards to fixings and so forth, you have some holes here that allows you some fixings. So from the spindle downwards, you've got a hole here, which is just approximately 21 mm from centre. And from this hole here, if I was to measure that there, let me just move my hand slightly, you can then have a measurement there. That there is round about 47 mm. And then you have this big one here, which I'll measure just the centre, there's about 80 mm. So it can accept a diverse range of handles and so forth.

So that's the particular application. And of course, on here as well, it tells you then on how to change the handing of the split spindle. Because depending on which way your door is hinged, you may need to change the handing in regards to what side of this particular lock will operate from the outside. Because it's different from the inside to the outside.

So there you go, guys. Just one of the products that we have on our website. But listen, if you need a bit more information or a bit more of advice on this or any of the products that we have, pop us over an email, use the live chat that we have. That's totally free. You can speak to me or any of the guys computer to computer, so to speak, so all tech-y and all gadget-y there, or by all means, do it the old-fashioned way, pick up the phone and give us a call.

Either way, we'd love to hear from you and, more importantly, we'd love to see you as one of our customers. So from me, Darrel, and all of us at the team, thanks for taking the time to tune in and we hope to catch up with you real soon now. Take care. Bye, bye.
