Hi guys, my name is Darrel. I'm head of the tech
team here at LocksOnline.co.uk, and today
we're doing product reviews and more importantly we're doing a
product review of the Union 3K74E.
Now this is the actual lock here. I wanted to show you
this because anybody who's in the industry might say,
well, hold on a minute, that's not the Union, that's
an actual Chubb.
And the truth of the matter is it is actually a Chubb lock
because what has happened is Assa Abloy, who owned
Union and also owned Chubb and he owned Yale and he owned a
lot of other companies as well, decided to disband the name Chubb, Chubb locks, and put all of the Chubb locks over
onto the Union brand. But suffice to say, the build
quality and the technology in this particular lock is
still Chubb which I'm really pleased about because, I've got
to be honest with you, I like this lock. I think it's a solid lock. it's
strong. It's sturdy. It's weighted. I mean, you could
throw this at a burglar and it would hurt them. So I do
like this lock a lot.
So let's look at a little bit of the detail on it. So you
can find out a little bit more about what makes a
British standard lock. So for starters if you zoom in here,
you'll see that there's a plate that sits around the lever mechanism that
sits inside, and this plate here is an anti-drill plate. And
the idea about this plate is to resist attack by
somebody trying to drill the lock. That's plus number one.
Plus number two as well, I don't know if you can zoom
right in for us, Lee, but this is an actual curtain that
sits in there that stops anybody from manipulating
the levers inside. So it's called a lever curtain, and the only way that
that can rotate when you put the key in, it rotates with
that. This particular version is the sash lock version.
So, in other words, it will accept the handle as well, and this is
the spindle here. It's an eight millimeter follower. This will accept
an eight millimeter spindle. So this would actually
operate the latch.
It's Chubb or Union, whichever way you want to call it. It
has a distinctive roller bolt latch here so you don't
have to worry about turning the latch around,
depending on the handling of the door. I, of course, like that. Another
distinctive advantage with this being a British
standard lock is that the bolt projection here which is
a substantial bolt, but its projection is 22 millimeters.
And in the front there, I don't know if you can actually
zoom a little bit there again, but you've got two
little roller bolts that sit in there and the idea there is
somebody decides to come in here and hacksaw that bolt off and when those
roller bolts, those roller bolts will spin. The blade will
just spin round and round. By the time you move the blade
backwards and forward those little spindles are just
going to rotate round and round. You should be there forever trying to
hacksaw the bolt through.
Now this particular lock comes in two different finishes.
It comes in brass and stainless steel which is this
particular one here. And on the face plate, I don't
know if you can zoom in - oh, we've got it upside down, if you zoom in you
can see the British standard kite mark there which is
what we call it. So the key, this is the key here,
beautiful, again well engineered key, solid full fixings here and
the back of the key is all welded with a nice box key for strong
stability and strength. This is what this key is all
about. It comes as standard with three keys. There's
the three keys for this particular type of lock.
What I'll do now very quickly is i'll give you some
measurements. This is the three inch lock case. It comes
in a two and a half inch case as well. But I got the
measurements here. So what you need to do is take a half inch off the
measurements, and that will give you some sort of an idea
as to what the two and a half inch lock measurements would
be. And, of course, they will be displayed on our website
anyway.
One of the distinct differences with this particular lock
is the actual back set measurement are different to
the universal set. They always have been different. I don't
know why, but when they decided to build these locks they decided to
move the back set a little bit different. So it's important to
know if you're retrofitting this with any other
British standard lock, you may find it's going to be slightly
out. It's only out by a couple of millimeters, but it is actually out.
So let's get some quick measurements just to get you guys
some idea. The case deck there is 80 millimeters. The
case height is 108 - let me get that down there - yeah,
about 108 millimeters. The fore end then is 150 millimeters. Fore and
width is 25 millimeters. The back set measurement now, that's
from the leading edge here to the centre where you
put the key in, that there is 53 millimeters or 54, 54
millimeters.
So there you go. This is the new Union 3K40. I hope this
video is explaining a bit about British standard and more
importantly explained a little bit about this
particular lock. If you're a discerning client and you're looking for good
security, guys, seriously consider this as being your
choice. We can do them keyed as like as well. So if you
put a dead lock a little bit further down with a dead lock on the
door and a sash lock In the centre, then we can key them all alike so that
one key fits all. So we can whatever we like. We can do it
any way in-house.
I hope this video has given you a little bit more
information about what you would normally expect in a
photo with some text. Hopefully this lock may be the one for
you, but if you need any more information, feel free to give us a call or
pop online or pop us an email, we'd love to talk to you.
Anyway, in the meantime thank you very much for taking the
time to watch this video. Catch you real soon. Take
care. Bye-bye now.
