Hi, guys. My name's Darrel. I'm head of the tech team here at
locksonline.co.uk, doing some product reviews today. What I have in front
of me is the Union privacy sash lock case. Not really much that we can say
about the benefits of a sash lock case for privacy, other than it's used to
obviously lock the old toilet door when you decide you want to go to the
toilet, or you want to use the bathroom.
So, I'm going to get it out of its bag. I'm going to go through some of the
measurements, and give you guys some sort of idea as to if you think that
this might work on your bathroom door, at least then you'll have a
considered opinion; and to see whether or not it will fit your door.
So, let's get it out of the bag, and we can see exactly what we do have,
here. Here's the actual lock itself. This is the two and a half inch
version, and obviously it's got a brass finish. What we have up here is, we
have the latch. That would work on the handle. So, you'd have a handle
there. This is what we call here, this particular part here, is called the
follower. That is standard as eight millimeters; I'm almost sure it's eight
millimeters. Let me just double check to make sure. Okay, yeah. We've got
8.1 millimeters, so it's eight millimeters.
So, whatever size of handles you choose, the size of the spindle needs to
be eight millimeters. Now, to be honest with you, that's pretty universal
these days. But there is a lot of European stuff coming into the country,
and you may find that some are seven millimeters. You'd find it a bit
wobbly. And some can actually be nine millimeters. So, it's well worth you
checking whichever handles you decide to go with, to make sure that the
follower is the same size.
Now, at the bottom there, you'll see this is like some sort of spider
configuration there. And that's only because this particular lock can
accept variations of what type of spindle would be best suited for that.
There's a universal measurement on those, and that's four millimeters. So,
whatever privacy handle set that you decide to have the turn, then that
follower there, this follower here, you'll be looking a measurement of four
millimeters.
Of course, you can have different variations on that, and they can sit in
different angles depending on where you want your turn. And of course, that
turn then throws this particular bolt at the bottom. So, typical like a
level lock in your front door, obviously it isn't as secure as that. I'll
get some measurements now, just to give you guys some sort of ideas.
So, this is the two and a half inch model, but to give you an idea of case
depth there where you've got a case depth of 63 millimeters, we've got a
case height there. Let's get a height for you. We've got a case height
there of 101 millimeters. Let me get the other ruler to give you a fore end
height. We've got a fore end height there of just over 150, 152
millimeters. We've got a fore end width there of 22 millimeters. Now, one
of the advantages with having that fore end width of only 22 millimeters is
that most internal doors are round about the 38 millimeters.
So, this particular lock is designed for an internal use. It's not designed
to be on an external door. Hence, the reason why the face plate is slightly
narrow than that you'll find on a British Standard lock. The actual case
thickness there as well will be slightly less. If I get a measurement on
that as well - yeah, that's only 13.7 millimeters. Whereas you'll find if
you've got a British Standard lock on a front door, you'd be up to 16
millimeters. So, this is designed to be on a thinner door, what you would
expect to have in your house - internally, that is.
So, that's the actual lock, there. That is the one from Union. It comes
with a key as well. It's a little, very basic, simple key that is used to
lock the door into place there. That's fine. It sits there like that.
That's the key - nothing fancy about it. It's just there, it just works. It
comes with some fitting instructions, should you need to sit down and
understand how to fit it.
It comes with a template as well, which will allow you to know how to drill
the holes in the door, etc. So, you've got all of that for yourself. It
also comes of course, with some fixing screws - pretty standard stuff. This
is the Union's version of their privacy lock. This is the two and a half
version, two and a half inch version in a brass finish. Like I've said,
they are available in a stainless steel finish, and they're also available
in a three inch, which is slightly deeper. I hope very much that this video
- I'm sorry for droning on a little bit - but I hope this video has given
you enough information for you to make a considered opinion as to whether
or not this particular lock is suitable for your application.
But anyway, if there's a measurement that I've not considered or anything
like that, I mean there's one I'm thinking about now which I will tell you
about, and that's the back set. That's the distance from the leading edge
there, to the centre. That there is 44, say 45 millimeters. That's the back
set measurement from the face plate to where the handle is going to sit on
the door, is 45 millimeters. It's quite an important measurement, sorry I
forgot that one. But if it's a lock for you, if you think it's the lock to
go on your door, then at least now you've got as much information as I can
tell you, for you to make a considered opinion.
