Horizontal locks are still very popular in the UK on old wooden doors where the keyhole and door knob are horizontally aligned in the traditional fashion. While you would not typically install this type of lock on a new door, when refurbishing an old wooden door or looking to replace the locks in an original door, it is more likely than not, that there would have been a horizontal lock installed, where the body of the lock sits deep into the door, rather than modern locks which tend to sit taller than they are deep.
This lock follows the old traditional style of 6" lock cases. Being 151mm deep (the metric equivalent to 6 inches), the keyhole is positioned 57mm away from the face of the lock (2¼") and the follower (the square hole to pass the spindle through for a knobset) is then positioned at 70mm from the keyhole (2¾"), so 127mm (5") from the faceplate to the centre of the door knob. You will also notice that the deadbolt sits above the latch, and not below. This is the opposite of modern styles but is often the case for this style of lock.
Following the traditional style of operation, the latch can be retracted by turning your door knobs clockwise or anti-clockwise. This takes away the common confusion of which way will open the door and which way will not. The deadbolt then will operate by using the key.
Six finishes are available for these locks - first we have the satin brass and satin stainless steel. These are the basic finishes that are most common for these locks, but we can also get polished brass, polished stainless steel, satin black and antique bronze finishes made for you - this may take a few extra days but these stunning finishes are well worth the wait.
