Combining the innovative new slam-action trigger design with the convenience and diversity of the electronic motorised system, we're proud to bring you the much sought-after AV3-E!
Developed by the astute German manufacturer Winkhaus, this system is an improvement upon the much loved AV2 locking system, featuring advancements with regards to the seamless slam-action locking system. If you're familiar with the AV2-E system already, then the AV3-E works exactly the same in terms of the motorised functionality, so you can use this system to control access digitally via an intercom system, a mobile phone trigger, a keypad, fingerprint reader, or whatever other device you prefer. The difference however between this and the AV2-E system, is in the physical attributes of the lock rather than the motorised functionality. For more information on this, continue reading!
So what's new with the AV3 system?
1. Central slam-action trigger
The new centralised trigger for the slam-action hookbolts at the top and bottom of the lock, ensures that the hooks are thrown even if there's a slight warping to the door towards the top or bottom. This was one of the criticisms of the AV2, which was by no means a design flaw, as it was only an issue for warped or ill-fitted doors, but nevertheless this has been cleverly tackled and rectified by Winkhaus on the new AV3 system.
2. Hookbolt guides
As you will see from the photos, the top and bottom hookbolts now have a separate guide-hook situated on the outer radius of the hook, which triggers with priority over the main hook, in order to locate and settle into the hook-keeps, allowing the hooks to settle in place properly as the door settles to the closed position. These guides are thicker than the hookbolt itself, which aids the opening operation too, which is of paramount importance if choosing to retract the hooks via key instead of handles, particularly on tightly fitting doors with weather-seals, or other conditions causing pressure on the door.
3. Daytime Passage Function
One of the most popularly requested features for locks these days on commercial premises (and some domestic), is the ability to have the door just 'on the latch' so to speak, so the door is not locked and you can freely enter and exit without using keys or any digital medium of gaining access. Winkhaus has heard these pleas and listened well. They have developed an incredibly intuitive solution for this, so that you can now flick a small switch on the centre-keep on the frame side, to enable or disable passage mode, which makes us of a magnetic trigger system to fire (or NOT fire) the hook bolts depending on whether you want passage mode active or not. The great thing about this being controlled by the keep, is that you don't need to change the lock if you want to add this feature in the future! This originally was an optional feature but through redevelopment of these locks, the passage feature is no longer an option and this part must be ordered with the lock.
Again, if you know all about the AV2 lock then you've probably heard everything you need to know to understand this system, but for those of you who aren't familiar with the AV2 system, here's a basic list of all the other features the AV3 offers.
1. Slam-Action Automatic Locking
By utilising a little trigger-latch on the face of the lock, the top and bottom hookbolts are automatically fired by the lock mechanism, meaning you no longer have to lift the handle to secure the door, it's done automatically with no handle operation required. Of course as mentioned above in the new features list, this is a central trigger which is an innovative improvement over the AV2's independent hook triggers.
2. Latch-Retraction via Key
Since this is an auto-locking electric multipoint, chances are you'll be using it for some form of an access control solution, so in order to prevent unauthorised access, you would need to have a non-functioning "fixed" handle on the outside, so to gain access you'd need to use your keypad or whatever means of access authentication you're using; but to ensure you can still get in with a key should you need to, you can fully lock and unlock the entire lock and the centre latch with the key (made a lot easier by the new hookbolt guides mentioned above).
As part of their dedication to offering the best quality and security, Winkhaus have successfully achieved Secured By Design accreditation on this multipoint!

3. High Security Standards
The Winkhaus AV3 comes with an array of recognised security standards. The most commonly known in the UK is the Secured By Design standard, a police-instigated initiative formed with the concept of manufacturers designing hardware to help prevent crime from the get-go. The Winkhaus AV3 is approved under the Secured By Design standard by Winkhaus UK Ltd, having successfully passed the testing scheme of PAS 24. Along with this, you get the VdS stamp, a similar initiative formed by an independent security institution, and the SKG** stamp which is achieved by independent tests against destructive forced entry attacks.
What's in the box?
The AV3-E is a built-to-order solution comprising of many parts required to achieve the electronic motorised version of the AV3 lock. Using our knowledge and technical understanding, we bundle the parts together for you to build the lock. The parts you will receive are as follows:
1 x Winkhaus AV3 AutoLock Multipoint Hookbolt Lock - 45mm Backset on a 20mm Radius-Ended Rail
1 x Winkhaus Electric Motor Unit
1 x Winkhaus Dedicated Power Supply Unit (Note as of October 2020 there is a new version of the PSU - full details can be seen on this document: October 2020 PSU Upgrade Info)
1 x Winkhaus 6-Metre Cable
1 x Winkhaus Cable Transition Unit (routed in door-loop)
- If keeps are ordered with the lock (they are required), you will also receive:
1 x Winkhaus Centre-Keep, sized and handed depending on your selection
2 x Winkhaus Hookbolt Keeps
- The passage facility is no longer optional, so must be ordered. This will then include:
1 x Winkhaus centre-keep module with passage switch
1 x Winkhaus switchable magnetic trigger
Please note - as this system is predominantly designed for composite doors and wooden doors, we've put this together on a typical 20mm radius-ended rail, available in a 45mm backset, but we can offer more solutions if necessary including 55mm backsets, or smaller backsets on 16mm rails for uPVC if required, however for this application we strongly recommend considering the GU Electric Lock for uPVC Doors as this is its main purpose and does the job well.
If you are planning on just having the cylinder on the outside and no handles the Union 3C14E Security Escutcheons will work with this lock at 38 mm Centres
