The latch on this model is also reversible which allows it to be fitted in either direction on the door. This multipoint lock also comes with a Hookbolt that can be found underneath the latch, which is also quite unique to this range of multipoint gearbox. The Saracen Multipoint gearbox comes with a 35mm backset, and a 92mm PZ centre. This model also allows split spindle functionality which allows standard handle locking from the inside, whereas outside, you could have just the key operating the lock.

Saracen develops and manufactures a wide range of Multipoints.

Gearboxes are usually the first part of these locks that fail, this is due to the amount of work they are required to carry out inside your door, taking up the majority of it.

If you are trying to find which Multipoint lock you need, the Saracen range will be marked underneath the latch, on the holdback facility with the company brand.

Hi, guys. My name is Darrel and I'm head of the tech team here at LocksOnline.co.uk. Thanks for taking some time to tune in and have a look at our product reviews.

Today we are looking at gear boxes for multipoint locks for UPVC doors. A little bit of an oddball, I know. They can get a bit complicated, I know, but we're going to try to get the myth out of that and tell you how easy it is to really change, maintain and repair your multipoint locks. Now 90% of the time when your multipoint lock fails, 90% of the time what is actually happening is the gear box, the part in the middle that we handle is what is failing. Not necessarily the bolts that sit on the top or the bolts that's on the bottom of the bolt that shoots out the front, it is all about the gear box. Now this particular gear box here is for a Saracen lock.

Now how do you know whether or not you've got a Saracen lock on your door? If you actually look at the leading edge where all the bolts and locks all come out, right here just underneath this snip here, you'll see a little black or grey plastic damn ticket for lack of a better word for it and it will have Saracen written on it. And the idea about that little piece is that you can push this latch in, slide it up and it holds this latch back if you're going to use the multi function of this particular type of lock house. So that is the indicator for you is to check to see if you have that little black piece of plastic and does it have Saracen written on it.

Another key mark of this particular multipoint gear box as well is that it has this little hook bolt that sits underneath the latch. So let's assume you got Saracen on there, let's assume you got the hook bolt. We are now nearly there to say that this is the particular kind of lock of the gear box that you have on your door. Now that you can take the lock out of your door, the other sort of measurements that you may need to look at are the backset measurements. That's the measurement from the leading edge to the centre of the keyhole there. That's pretty standard on this particular lock at 35mm. The PZ measurement, that's the distance of the centre of the handle there to the centre of the keyhole there, that is also 92mm. That's an industry standard. So those are the other markers that you may need to know.

Now one of the distinct advantages of this particular type of gear box over other some other manufacturers is that it has the ability to use a split spindle. That means that you can different functionality from inside the door compared to on the outside the door. One of those distinct advantages is that you can actually use this particular type of lock as a latching function from outside. So you can close the door, the handle won't allow the latch to work but you need to put the key in to draw the latch back. Very similar to a traditional Yale lock on a wooden door sort of principle.

And if you're taking your lock apart and you may have something similar to this, may not be this particular type but this is what we call a split spindle. And if it has that then you are definitely using that sort of functionality within the lock. So that's a little bit of top tip there. And the way that these would work is that one will go on one side. The reason for these springs is that it holds everything in place. And then of course then, the other one sits in there like that. And that's how that would work. Springs then hold it all in place to make sure that it doesn't come loose and fall apart.

So there you go, guys. This is the Saracen gear box. It's actually manufactured by a company called Era in the UK. But, like I said, the key markers are the hook bolt and it has Saracen written on that little plastic marker. So if you've got those then chances are this is the correct gear box for you. So if there is more information you need or if you're not 100% sure, listen, pop us over an email, use live chat on our website, you can either talk to me or any other guys on the sales team. We're all pretty knowledgeable about these product ranges. And have a chat with us and we can talk you through any problems or concerns that you may have. Ultimately, we love to see you as customer; that would be a really good plus for us. So from me, Darrel, and all of us here at the LocksOnline team, take care and we'll catch up with you real soon. Take care now. Bye-bye.
