Hi guys. My name is Darrel and I'm head of the tech team here at LocksOnline.co.uk and thanks for taking some time to tune into one of our program review videos. And what we have here in front of us today is a set of UPVC handles. Now what's so special about these particular handles is the PZ measurement. It's the centre between the handle and the centre of the cylinder. So let's get these bad boys out for you to have a look at them in a bit more detail.
So this is the actual inside handle where this is the outside handle. The difference between the handles is is that the outside ones, I've got the threading and the outside ones I've got the hole in. As you can see there, you can see the hole at the top there. And the idea is that this screw would go through from the back from the inside through there and clamp the handle, which is on the outside there. So that's the principle of that.
Now when I said to you before about the PZ, the measurement of the PZ is the centres and on the inside here it's the measurement from the centre there to the centre of the keyhole down there is 68mm. That's the centres. It's not that popular these days, compared to what we see on most you UPVC doors is about 92mm, and the old measurement used to be 72. But most of it now is 92, but there are still around a range of locks that are still being sold with 68mm centres. So you can check your centres, and if those centres are bang on for you then probably this is the handle for you.
Now fair dues to Hoppe, they've gone a little bit further and gone that extra mile and they've got these little spring cassettes there. And the idea of the spring cassettes is that they would sit inside there like that, or set up like that if you want it, doesn't really matter. And when you put the spindle through, into the follower there, now your handle is spring-loaded. So super cool.
But you can also lift your handles up. So if your UPVC door is the type where you lift the handles up, and then you put the key in, and then you turn the lock, we can still do that. Okay, so that's no problem at all. What it does do, what these spring cassettes do, is it takes all the weight off your latch, because normally the latches aren't really designed to hold the weight of the handle as well, and that's why you find handles starting to droop. You might walk past a UPVC door and the handles are drooping, and that's because the spring inside the lock is starting to get really weak from the amount of use it gets.
So top tip, use some spring cassettes like that and fair dues to Hoppe, they put a pairing for us for this. You can use one or you can use the two, it doesn't matter. Obviously two is going to be more stronger in the spring in the tension compared to just the one.
Now one thing else is well, with these particular handles, is if you think to yourself "I'm thinking it's about the right one, but I'm not 100% sure." I don't know if you can actually zoom in there, but there's a number that's at the top of there, and the number on these pair of handles is 363 and then underneath that is a 5. Okay, so have a look at your handles and if yours says 363 and 5, the chances are that these handles are going to be the same handles as what I'm showing you here today.
Just to give you some more info, the centres and that's the fixing centres from there to there, that is just quickly get that on there, and I'm getting those fixing centres there at being 215mm. that's the fixing centres. Be mindful also, that the fixing centre at the bottom is just underneath the cylinder there. It's just underneath the cylinder and of course this one is up quite a distance. So be aware of that.
If you want to make sure that it is Hoppe that you have on your door, if you zoom in, I don't know if you can get that there. That's pretty tight there, that's pretty small. But there's a little Hoppe logo there that you see on the front of the handles as well. So all brilliant little markers there to give you some sort of identification to make sure that this is the set of handles for you.
The width of these handles, I get in there at 26mm. And the overall length of this handle here, if I go from the top of the bottom and we're looking at 235mm, from the top to the bottom. The size of the follower, I'll get you that as well, just to make sure. The size of the follower or the spindle perhaps, is about an 8mm spindle. So you want to check to see what size your follower is to make sure that you've got 8mm. Obviously that's the hole in the lock.
So there you go guys. I think I've given you all that I possibly can to help you identify whether or not this is the handle that you need. But listen, if you need some more information we're always here from 9 to 5 on Monday to Friday. Give us a call anytime you want. Use the live chat on our website. It's free. So that's a really big top tip. But what we'd really love is to see you guys as a customer. So from me and all of us here at the team, take care, and I hope you enjoyed the video. Take care now. Bye-bye.
