This is the Maco UPVC Window Lock Gearbox. The fixing centre measurement for the Maco Gear Box is 42mm, which is an industry standard. The follower in this model of gearbox accepts a 7mm spindle, which is also an industry standard for window locking handles. It is available in both 20mm and 22mm backset sizes.
Maco are specialists in designing and manufacturing locking equipment for UPVC windows and doors.
Gearbox in windows and doors seem to be the first thing to break which is most likely due to the stress of it having to carry out all of the mechanical functions of the locking system.
These models should have Maco stamped on the side. These stamps should read "BS20" and "BS22" respectively, referring to their backset sizes.
One final indentifying mark of these models is a stamp on the inside of the case reading "RH". If a few of these marks are showing on your version, this is most likely the model of gearbox you are looking for.
Hi guys, my name's Darrel, and I'm the head of the tech team here LocksOnline.co.uk. Thanks for taking some time to tune in and have a look one of our product review videos.
The product that we've got here in front you today is a range of gear boxes from a company called Maco. The gear boxes are designed for UPVC windows and here's the bad boys here for you to have a quick look at. Now they are very, very popular in the UK and what I want to do in this video is give you some sort of ident markers to help you make the right decision as to whether or not this is the actual gear box that is sitting on your window and that you're thinking that you need to change.
In 99.9% of cases, if you've got a failure on your UPVC window and the locking mechanism, more common than not, it's the actual gearbox that actually fails. It's the part that's taking more of the abuse from operating the handle, etc. So even though we can get all of the side pieces that will come out here and shoot the bolts into the frame on either side, we can get all of those shooting up all at all. But check your gear box first because chances are, it's your gear box that are failing and everything else is working fine. You just need a better protection with oil.
So to make some form of key identifiers on this one from this particular range is that has actually Maco stamp in the head there. I don't know if you can actually zoom in closely on that for you. But it actually has Maco stamp in there. All right, so that's one of another key ident for you.
These also come in two different types of back sets. They either come in 20-millimetre back set. That's the distance from here to the centre of the actual follower there or they come in 22 millimetre. To make sure whether or not you've got the right one, once you've taken the gear box out, if you actually look there, you can actually see–I've got it upside down. Let me do it a little better for you there. You can actually see there, it's got BS standing for back set and 22 stamped there. Can you zoom in close enough to see that?
Now as I move it to the light now, maybe it's a little bit too small to see but yeah, it's got got BS 22 written on there. Of course on this one then, you'll see then if I zoom in there - it's too shiny it is probably - you can see there it's got BS20. I don't know if I ca get the light in there or whatever is that you can see that there.
So those are the key high dents that you need to be looking at to see whether or not this is the type of gearbox that is on your window. Some other crucial measurements as well is that these centres you understand it in the industry at 42 millimetres centres. They are pretty standard and the size of the follower there is 7 millimetre as the size of the spindle that you will find on your handle will be 7 millimetres.
So there you go, guys, I don't think that there's much more that I can say. You can see here that they got RH written, stamped on the other side of them. They both got RH stamped on there and one stamped on there. So that's another little key indicator to see whether or not this is the actual gear box that you might have.
But listen, if there's something else that you need to be aware of or there's something that I haven't mentioned there, and you think to yourself oh scratching my head and thinking to yourself of how they actually got put together, etc., pop us over an email. You can use our live chat on our website. That's totally free. You can chat with either me or any of the guys ion sales team during the week or day. No problem at all or pick up a phone and have a chat with us.
