The GU Guardian UPVC window lock gear box comes with a 22mm backset, which can be measured from the centre of the follower to the edge of the rail. The fixing centres for this particular model measure 42mm in total. This is an Industry standard.
GU have designed and manufactured this gearbox as a replacement item for UPVC window lock gear boxes.
Gearboxes in general tend to be one of the first items to break; this is because of the amount of work they do in relation to the mechanical working of the window lock.
This model is the GU guardian, which is meant as a replacement, should have GU stamped onto the cover plate and sometimes the side of the gearbox itself.
Once the cover plate is removed you are able to see the gearbox and indentify if this is the correct model you require.
Hi guys, my name is Darrel, and I'm head of the tech team here at LocksOnline.co.uk. Thanks for taking the time to tune in and have a look at one of our product review videos.
Today we're talking about gear boxes for UPVC windows. The product that we have here in front of us today is the one that is manufactured by GU. It's the GU Guardian gear box that's designed for UPVC windows.
Now mostly, for UPVC windows, you normally have a bolt that shoots out at either end of the window and as you move the handle, it shoots the bolts up into the frame. All of these mechanisms rely on a gear box that sits in the centre. And mostly, over time, the window locks hardly ever lubricate and they start to seize up a little bit, they start to get a bit rusted. Or through the winter they don't even get opened at all and when you try to unlock them, you find you can't open them or they open and then you can't close them.
And normally what fails is the actual gear box in the centre, not necessarily the rods. The rods can be cleaned up. We don't normally sell many rods, but they can be available and they can be gotten if you need them. But it's normally the gear boxes in the centre that fails.
This is the one that is manufactured by GU. This is the actual product here. And what's distinctive about this particular one, if you're thinking do you have a GU model on your particular window, is it actually has GU stamped on the actual face plate here as you can see.
So by undoing those two screws there allows you to take the plate off, and here would be where you would put your extensions to shoot bobs onto either side of the actual window. So that's quite distinctive. GU really only makes this particular range of window locks so if it's got GU stamped on it, chances are it's this particular gear box.
Our standard, this one has a 22 millimetre back set, it has 42 millimetre centres for the actual fixings to hold your handle in. I have a handle here and as you can see, that fits in there no problem at all. And of course you'd screw through to get it on to work properly.
The actual size hole over there is a standard again of 7 millimetre so there's not really much of a great story to tell about this particular type of gear box. They've decided to put their name on it which makes it really helpful for you to be able to identify it to be honest with you.
But if you need a little bit more information or you want a bit of advice, by all means pop onto our live chat.
