This model is a part of Winkhaus's high security range; it should have Cobra and Winkhaus stamped on the body of the UPVC window lock gear box itself. These models work in conjunction with rod style window locking mechanism that protrudes from either side of the gearbox. This gearbox accepts a 7mm spindle and has 42mm fixing centres. The backset available for the Winkhaus cobra HS UPVC window lock gear box is 22mm.
UPVC window gearboxes tend to fail faster than any other component on a UPVC multipoint lock, this is due to the high amount of stress the gearbox is under when having to deal with opening, closing, locking and unlocking movements, and overtime they will begin to fail.
The backset available for the Winkhaus cobra HS UPVC window lock gear box is 22mm, which is the measurement from the edge of the cam to the centre of the follower. This number will also be stamped onto the case itself.
Hi guys, my name's Darrel, and I'm head of the tech team here at LocksOnline.co.uk. Thanks for taking the time to tune in and have a look at one of our product review videos.
We're talking about gear boxes on UPVC windows today, and the one that we have here in front of us is Winkhaus Cobra. They call it the Cobra High Security gear box that's designed to work on UPVC windows.
This is the actual gear box that I have here in front of you. Now if your gear box is gone or you have a problem with your particular gear box, then there are some key identifiers that you may see on this particular one is that it actually as Cobra written on the front there. I don't know whether or not you can zoom in close enough to see that there.
You'll also see on the side here as well it has Winkhaus stamped on either side there and that's quite small, I don't know whether or not you can get in there. You can see that just about there, Winkhaus. So that's the actual...if you've got that particular type of gear box on your window, and it's got Cobra written on it and it's got Winkhaus written, on it then this is probably the one that you're looking for.
But what I'm going to do is I'm going to give you some other sort of other key measurements and some other key markers as well to help you make an informed decision as to whether or not this is the actual gear box for you. Now mostly gear boxes on windows is the part that prematurely fails. It's not necessarily the rods that stick out on either end on here. They would actually fit in here, as you can see here. Then it's the rods that shoot in to either side of the window.
Normally those get corroded or stuff like that, but they can be taken out. They can be cleaned up and they can be working fine. But of course, when they are seizing up, it's the gear box inside here that kind of wears out eventually over time and breaks down.
One of the other things that you need to be aware of is that the spindle there is a standard 7 millimetres and the centres there on the standard screw hold fixtures is 42 millimetre. That's pretty standard in the industry because most handles are those sort of sizes. If I was to get an ordinary window handle here and if I was to put that in there, etc, that it fits there nice and tidy and no problems at all.
There's not really much more that you can say about this particular lock other than it's got a 22 millimetre back set. That's the distance from the centre rail there to the centre there has actually got 22 stamped in there as well. I don't know if you can zoom in close enough to see that.
So it's the Winkhaus. It's the Cobra High Security range of gear boxes available on our website.
