Digital Cylinders is the new way of securing your home in the 21st Century, My aim in this article is to explain to you how easy it is!
The Simons Voss digital cylinder makes this possible by replacing your existing cylinder in one easy step. A big bonus of this little kit is that this can be installed by a complete and utter novice. How do I know this? That’s because, I am that novice!
I’ve not long started a career in locks and one thing that really interests me is technology behind keyless entry. Luckily for me the hot products these days really spark my interest so this morning I’ve been playing around with a Simons Voss digital euro cylinder and transponders. Upon removing the cylinder from the box and examining it I was taken aback by the precision engineering and sheer beauty of the machined knobs. This is a real piece of tech candy.
So to give you the lowdown for the uninitiated this is basically a complete access control system miniaturised into a single lock cylinder. Within the cylinder there is a receiver, microchip and power source. Replacing your key you have the choice of a key fob, just like a car or a card the same size as a credit card, or you can have both. Press the button on your remote fob or present the card to the cylinder and the cylinder will unlock, signified by 2 subtle beeps from the cylinder, this then lets you turn the knob to unlock the door. The cylinder rearms itself automatically after 10 seconds allowing you time to come in, close the door and turn the inside knob or thumb turn to lock the door.
Fitting this cylinder is no more difficult than fitting any other cylinder as we can program it before we ship it out to you, so it really is just a case of being able to plug and play. The cost of the basic kit starts at around £260 which personally I think is great value for money for a system of this quality and innovation, and as it can replace any euro or oval cylinder in most cases you can keep the original lock case.
The system can be programmed to accept fobs, cards or both, this is particularly handy as you could keep the fob on your car key ring but also have a card in your wallet or purse as backup for those times where you might just be taking a walk down the shops for the morning paper, or heaven forbid you lose your car keys!
Talking of losing your keys, this system has a huge advantage over traditional mechanical locks in the sense that in the past if your keys were compromised then you would have little option but to change out the cylinders in your home, a costly mistake. The Simons Voss digital cylinder is so advanced that should you lose a card or fob they can be simply and quickly barred from the system giving you peace of mind that you can’t put a price on.
