Choosing The Right Safe For Your Home Or Business
If you're looking for a safe, chances are you have cash or valuables that you're looking to keep out of the hands of the opportunist thief. But what happens if they do manage to breach the safe? Will your insurance cover it? This article will give you all the information you need to know about how to choose the right safe with the right level of protection against theft, should someone manage to compromise the effective security of your safe. The key terms we'll be focusing on are Cash Ratings, and the various grades of European Standards EN-1143 and EN-14450.
Cash ratings work on a basis of monetary figures. These figures equate to an exact amount of cover for cash, or 10x the cash rating value if the goods being stored are valuables rather than cash.
So, a £1000 Cash Rating (£1k Cash Rating) will cover you for £1000 in cash, or £10,000 worth of valuables. The full range of cash ratings are below:
|Cash Rating||Cover for Cash||Cover for Valuables|
|£1K Cash Rating||£1,000||£10,000|
|£2K Cash Rating||£2,000||£20,000|
|£3K Cash Rating||£3,000||£30,000|
|£4K Cash Rating||£4,000||£40,000|
|£5K Cash Rating||£5,000||£50,000|
There are several European Standards which are a more common requirement for higher value application and typically business / retail premises. This comprises of two levels of EN14450, and 7 grades of EN1143-1.
To save any confusion, lets look at them one by one in a table similar to the one for Cash Ratings.
|European Standard||Equivalent Cash Rating|
|EN-14450 S1||£2k Cash Rating|
|EN-14450 S2||£4k Cash Rating|
|EN-1143-1 Grade 0||£6k Cash Rating|
|EN-1143-1 Grade 1||£10k Cash Rating|
|EN-1143-1 Grade 2||£17.5k Cash Rating|
|EN-1143-1 Grade 3||£35k Cash Rating|
|EN-1143-1 Grade 4||£60k Cash Rating|
|EN-1143-1 Grade 5||£100k Cash Rating|
|EN-1143-1 Grade 6||£150k Cash Rating|
So if you relate the equivalent cash rating to the table in the Cash Ratings section above, you will see its worth in cash and valuables and be able to make an informed decision as to which safe will keep your cash and valuables... SAFE!
Get it in writing!
Finally, before you go ahead and invest in a safe, speak to your insurance company. Make sure that they confirm in writing to you, that your policy will cover the value of the cash or goods proposed to be kept in the appropriate safe for said cash or valuables. If you are able to provide them with the make, model, cash rating and/or European Standard that qualifies the safe to be covered for the value you plan on storing, then they should have no problem confirming your policy coverage.
Many thanks for reading - I hope this clears up any mystery surrounding these safe standards!
