If you have a small letter plate on your front door or, worse still, no letter plate at all; it can be frustrating returning home to find damaged documents or creased magazines on your door matt, or having to constantly trudge back and forth to the sorting office to pick up your mail. Even if your letter plate is large enough for your needs, you may have a little four legged fiend who loves nothing more than to rip to shreds anything that the postman slips through the door.
For the people in this situation, or those who simply want to add an attractive feature to their front porch or wall, a wall mounted mailbox is the perfect solution. Not only will it add an extra touch of class to your home, it could potentially save you from having valuable documents, bank and credit cards, or birthday cards containing money stolen by an opportunistic thief.
In the past, thieves who targeted the post were most likely looking to steal valuables such as money, cheques and parcels, but this is no longer the case. Today they are more likely to target documents, pin numbers and credit/debit cards, in order to steal your identity in order to commit online fraud. According to figures published by fraud prevention organisation Cifas, the incidences of identity theft in the UK have risen steeply in the last decade, from 77,642 in 2008 to 172,9191 in 2016. While much of this increase is due to online activity, Cifas still recommend that people consider their off-line activity and ensure that that they have a secure mailbox to prevent documents that could be used to steal an identity fall into the wrong hands.
According to United States Postal Service figures there are more than 10,000 arrests for mail theft/possession of stolen mail in the United States every year. In the US, freestanding or post mounted mailboxes situated at the end of a driveway or next to the curb are far more common, but having a wall mounted mailbox attached to the wall of your home is much more secure. It is not an easy target for potential thieves, as they would have to come right up to your house and risk the chance of you catching them red-handed, significantly reducing the risk of it being stolen from or vandalised. This would deter the majority of criminals who want risk free, easy pickings.
So what about the UK? Are you at risk of having your post stolen here in blighty? Police figures in the decade from 2008 to 2017 show that an average of 2,700 incidences of postal theft are recorded in England & Wales each year. An astonishing figure, which is more than a quarter of the number reported in the US, a country with a population more than five times greater than that of England & Wales. Perhaps a securely locked wall mounted mailbox on your home could prevent you from being added to those figures in the future.
Convenience and Style
As well as giving extra security they offer, there is another great benefit to having a mailbox wall mounted on your home rather than situated at the end of your driveway or lane; and that is the level of convenience they provide. Rather than having to walk all the way down the drive in the pouring rain to collect your mail you can simply open the front door, retrieve your mail quickly and easily, and get back into the warmth of your home without getting a drop of rain on you! A wall mounted mailbox could also be a godsend for those of us who suffer back pain or mobility issues; and struggle awfully whenever we have to bend over to retrieve anything from the floor. Imagine never having to bend over to collect your post from the door matt ever again!
For the lucky ones who are able bodied and live in areas where the threat of crime is not of great concern, there would seem little reason to have a wall mounted mailbox installed. But function is not the sole reason to install a mailbox, there are also aesthetics to consider. Simply put; a smart, well designed mailbox, that compliments the rest of your front door or garden furniture, is easy on the eye and can add an extra touch of elegance to your homes’ facade. Design is certainly a major consideration for manufacturers of mailboxes, as they know that people will not install a product which looks unsightly onto their property. As a result of this mailboxes are available in various colours and styles to suit a wide range of tastes.
European Standard EN-13724
With all of these considerations in mind, you still might be unsure as to whether the mailbox you are considering purchasing is as secure and well built as you would like it to be. What most people are still probably unaware of is that there is a European Standard (EN-13724) relating to mailboxes that is concerned with their security, construction and ability to receive mail without causing damage to it.
In order to achieve European Standard EN-13724 a mailbox must comply to the following criteria:
- It must be able to receive a C4 envelope (324mm x 229mm - capable of holding unfolded A4 sheets of paper), without it being bent or folded, and without damage to the envelope and contents.
- A length way delivery mailbox must have a mail slot width measuring between 230mm and 280mm.
- A side way delivery mailbox must have a mail slot width measuring between 325mm and 400mm.
- The mail slot height must be between 30mm and 35mm.
- The volume of the mailbox must allow it to hold a 40mm thick pile of envelopes.
- The mail slot should not contain any sharp edges that could potentially cause damage to envelopes.
- It must contain an anti-fishing/anti-theft baffle.
- It must be lockable with at least 200 key differs or combinations.
- It must be both corrosion and water resistant - it must not allow water to enter that amounts to more that 1% of its volume.
- It must not contain windows.
- The flap over the mail slot must be easy to open and self closing.
These are the main features of European Standard EN-13724 and, I am sure you will agree, it provides peace of mind that any mailbox that has achieved this standard is going to be a top quality product.
