Crime Wednesday – Kettering, Northamptonshire
Hi and welcome to another edition of ‘Crime Wednesday’ each week LocksOnline’s commitment is not only to run a business and make some dosh, but at the same time give a little back in the way of reports and information of what is happening on our streets in the towns, villages and cities in this fine country.
In the past we have looked at various towns like, Salisbury, Tiverton, Tenby etc. Today we are going to have a look the Boot and Shoe town of Kettering in the county of Northamptonshire.
Doing a little research on the town it seems to have been the centre of attention for making boots and shoes but it started to decline around the mid 70’s because of foreign trade and things being made overseas that could be made a lot cheaper, seems to be the case with loads of towns around our country. There is however, a few companies bucking the trend and still manufacture fine shoes from the town.
I was fortunate to have visited the town the weekend just gone and also popped around some of the local sites in the area. A couple of miles away was a small village called ‘Grafton Underwood’ that was a big airport in the second world war where a lot of American Bomber personnel spent the cold winters shuttling bomber runs into the heart of Europe. I popped up to the village during my stay and saw the celebration stone laid in honour of these guys who for some give their lives for the freedom that we have today. Quite a poignant time as my visit coincided with V Day.
Without further ado, let’s have a look at the stats and crime levels in the town of Kettering!
A town around 80’000 people see on average 3 dozen burglaries a month which seems to be average for the size of the town compared to other towns that we have surveyed before. May seemed to be particularly high in the town with over 55 burglaries. Most of these seemed to be concentrated in the areas off Stamford Road. This area is mostly domestic homes.
Serious crime like Robbery started the year quite high with around ½ dozen reported incidents a month, during the summer it seemed to calm down to just one or two a month, but of late September saw a steep rise back up to 4. Hopefully this is just a glitch in the figures and October when the figures are released hopefully may see these figures go down.
On average there is about 50 reported incidents of shoplifting in the town obviously based around the main town centre. There seems to have been in June 6 shoplifting incidents in WH Smiths alone with the rest dotted around the same area.
On average there is over a dozen reported incidents of drugs in the town a month, February 2012 saw exactly 12 reported incidents of which seven of these was in the town centre suggesting recreational drug taken and perhaps not the hard drugs, The figures are two general to suggest the type of drugs, obviously in an ideal world we would like to see ‘No Drugs’
London Road Police station is where you want to be going to have a chat with the boys in blue, they have a strong neighbourhood watch scheme in the town and popping into the station and having a chat with Sergeants Alex or Simon will get you on the right track to get involved with existing schemes or starting up one of your own.
Many thanks for taking the time to have a read of one of our Crime Wednesday Reviews, should you want your town or city focused in our weekly reviews pop an email over to firstname.lastname@example.org and we will spend some time and do the research for you.
