Crime Wednesday’s - Wincanton Town - Somerset - LocksOnline Special
Hi all, we have chosen Wincanton town in Somerset this week to drive down into the stats of what the crime figures are like for this small town.
I you are like me I only know much of Wincanton by the similar company name Wincaton PLC, famous for being a big logistics company based in the same town, Thus company has been bought and sold over the years and according to wiki is at the moment owned by Dairy Crest. Dairy crest owns the brands ‘Pilgrims Choice cheddar cheese’
The area of Wincanton has seen habitation before the 14th century and was called in the ‘Doomsday Book’ Wincaleton meaning ‘pleasant town on the Cale’
Historically, there has been a few battles in this area between the Britons, Danes and Saxons where it is said the Danes got whipping by the Britons.
Today, the fight is in ensuring the crime is reduced by the local police, Wincanton on the last count had a population of around 4500. Statically, crime in the town is relatively low, but so far this year (2012) there has been over a dozen reported burglaries, with January and May being the worst months, with May hitting six burglaries.
The town seems to have it own fair share of violent crime also, with over 20 reported incidences in the last 6 months and February having 10 of these, it seems to be in fits and starts. In February, three of these violent crimes happened in ‘Deansly Way’ and the others around the town centre.
Burglary figures as mentioned was high in March, the areas affected was the Wincanton Sports Ground and around Cemetery Lane amongst other areas.
Criminal Damage which includes Arson, and damage to vehicles topped over 30 incidents in the last six months March seemed to be the worse month with nine reported incidents. Three of these were in Cavalier Way, and another three was in Saxon Way.
All in all Wincanton like most small towns has crime of one degree or another, but the figures show it to be pockets of crime not dissimilar to most small towns. It has it fair share of anti social behaviour, spates of burglaries, less that half a dozen shoplifting incidents, and none of the serious stuff like robbery.
Next time you in Somerset pop in and say hi to all in the local Public House ‘The Bear’ where a warm welcome is always given, call in as a stranger only once.
The town has a lady Inspector (Inspector Jackie Gold) and Dean Hamilton is the towns Sergeant, There is a meeting in the Town hall on the 28th August and a further one on the 10th September both at 19:30 to discuss and help improve the towns crime rates, why don’t you get involved perhaps join the local ‘Neighbourhood watch scheme’ don’t forget if you need to have a chat with your local ‘bobby’ dial 101 from any phone.
