Hi all, over the past few weeks we have had great feed back from our readers of Crime Wednesday weekly articles, we had an email from David Rees to review his home town of Carmarthen in SW Wales.
Doing a bit of research into Carmarthen, I was astonished to learn that it is one of the oldest towns in Wales, records show inhabitants have been their back past the 15th century. Situated on the River Towy 8 miles or so from Carmarthen Bay.
The population for the town increases in term time every year as Trinity College and the University of Wales have campus's here, so quite a young and dynamic culture is present in the town.
It is said, the town has a connection with Merlin from King Arthur’s days and it is alleged that Merlin was born in a cave nearby.
So without further ado, lest drive down into the stats to see what is happening in the town.
There is Burglary in the town but with a population of over 14’000 people on average over the last seven months has seen about 3 break-ins a month. May, was on top with six break-ins yet July saw only one break in. This is a great testament to Dyfed Powys Police and may have something to do with their head quarters being just up the road from Carmarthen.
Anti Social Behaviour
As you may suspect with it being an University Town, the youngsters are going to drink a little to much at weekends with over 90 reported anti social incidents every month and March seemed to top the charts at over 108 incidents. As you may guess looking at the charts it seems to be concentrated in the towns centre and areas were people seem to hang out.
Again there is drugs in the town, of late, the figures has rose since the beginning of the year, on average there is about 15 reported drug incidents per month, that is for dealing, possession and growing. July saw a hike of over 25 reported incidents and this could be a sign that DPP has had a crack down on drugs in the town. It would be interesting to go back to have a look at the figures in a few months time to see if the trend is down from August 2012. April saw the least at only 4 reported incidents.
There is a degree of public order offences that include a weapon, being either a firearm and/or a knife. the records show these are reported when someone is in fear, but it is nice to see that there is none of the serious stuff like Robbery in the town and no reported incidences over the last 6 months at least
The town has its fair share of violent crime however, this includes offences like Assault, GBH, Sexual etc. averaging about 15 reported offences a month.
It is hard to dig down into the stats to see if this has increased over the years or stayed the same. perhaps we should review our towns on Crime Wednesdays every year, sadly that would only make us able to do 52 a year :-).
Hope you have enjoyed the read, Please feel free and pop us a email or comment below if you would like us to drive down into the crime statistics for your town.
Take care and catch you next week on Crime Wednesday
