2. Windows
Windows are a very common source for thieves to use as entry, visible window locks can act as a deterrent, as most thieves won't want to break glass and run the risk of drawing attention to themselves.
Pay particular attention to downstairs windows, windows which can't be seen from the street and any easy to reach upstairs windows.
So What can I do?
Make sure all windows are locked, that personal belongings are out of sight. Unfortunately there is no way to toatally secure a window without shutters, so visual deterants or alarms are advised

3. Keys.
Incredibly people often lose their keys and keyrings with their property name on the keyring! or are targeted by criminal groups in pubs and clubs. If a criminal can get in and out with any fuss they will take that option, so make sure your keys are secure.
So What can I do?
If you have any reason to believe your keys have been stolen change the locks immediately, and Don't leave keys in typical hiding places such as under the doormat or in a flowerpot. Leaving keys near a window or door is also a no-no. Thieves can get hold of them using wires, hooks and magnets. Also if you have you keys registered criminals can not duplicate your key unless they are the official order, making it easier for you to identify when your keys have gone missing.

4.Alarm systems
A visible burglar alarm is another good way to make an intruder think twice. There are a huge range of systems on the market, from inexpensive ones which you fit yourself to more sophisticated products costing hundreds of pounds.
So What can I do?

Whilst you can fit burglar alarms your self we advise getting some advice from your local crime prevention officer. Police recommend that alarms meet BS standards, badly installed or maintained systems often cause more problems than they prevent. So it may be worth talking to a local installer who is certified and can ensure upkeep and service is kept on the system. The most simple solution is a dog, territorial dogs are very good at making a fuss about any intruders, make sure to put up signs warning visitors about your guard dog.
5. Gardens, Sheds and Garages.
Unfortunately these are all to often over looked, but easy access to; tools, doors, keys. Make sure all outbuildings are secured with a good study padlock, and don't be tempted to go cheap on the chain. If the chain is weak then the padlock is as good as useless.
