Oil thefts are expected to rise this coming winter as UK inflation increases 0.2%. So Fuel Tank Security is a must this Autumn. Furthermore it has been reported that between April 1988 and July 2012 fuel prices have seen one of the highest peaks than any other utility bill, increasing by a staggering 101%. This news is putting further pressure upon rural based businesses and homes as oil is being seen as a valuable commodity.
It has been reported for many years that fuel theft is on the up rise with the motive being closely linked to the continuing rise in price for crude oil. Prevention is key for those living and conducting business in rural areas, as properties in the countryside are being seen as an easy target. However, it isn’t just the winter months when oil tank owners should stay alert of any potential activity. It was reported last month that a haulage firm in Willenhall were raided 11 times since the start of the year, prompting them to increase security.
There are a number of cost effective ways for oil tank owners to keep their supply safe and secure with the most common form of security, for oil tanks with lids, being padlocks. However, one of the most effective ways is to regularly check the gauge and become mindful of the volume of oil stored in the tank to begin with.
Remote electronic gauges that are placed in the home sound an alarm if the content suddenly drops or falls below a quarter, alerting owners of a potential theft, leak or simply when it is time to order the next delivery.
Another way, which can be seen as more beneficial to businesses rather than households is the instalment of CCTV cameras. For companies who store a large volume of oil, protecting your investment is crucial, and CCTV cameras can provide you with the comfort in knowing that it is been overseen. Alternatively dummy CCTV cameras can be just as effective as the real thing for households who don’t want to fork out for additional security measures.
Camouflaging or growing trees around the oil tank can also deter thieves. However, it is important to remember that you don’t block access to the tank or to its vent when turning it into a garden feature or disguising it, as this can cause damage.
With oil prices fluctuating, now that inflation has recently risen, it is important for all oil tank owners to be on guard and do all they can to prevent any criminal activity from coming to their front door.
RPM Fuels and Tanks urge oil tank owners to do all they can to prevent oil theft, especially as oil continues to be a valuable commodity. When locking your heating oil supplies we recommend that your use fill point caps that will enable you to keep your oil secure.
