The ABI (Association of British Insurers) have through a survey shown that one in four people trust their neighbours and are one of the keys to feeling secure at home.
It does, however, imply that homeowners are needlessly putting themselves at risk of financial disaster because this false sense of security is demonstrating that they are overlooking the basic forms of security
To help homeowners the ABI have produced a booklet that will help protect them and give more guidance on home security.
Unbelievably three in ten people admit to leaving doors unlocked and window open when popping out, but totally contradicts that 42% of people surveyed recognise the importance of good quality locks.
It has been shown that 36% of burglaries are from the opportunist and coming the hot weather (June 2012) more and more people are leaving windows open for fresh air.
To compound the concerns nearly a quarter of homes have not content insurance at all. Which never mind how frightening it can be being broken into they would also have a massive bill to replace what has been stolen.
The two new booklets form the ABI, clearly gives good advise to as to what best insurance that you need as well as good tips for keeping your home safe whilst away.
Nick Starling (Director of General Insurance) at the ABI said.
“While it can be reassuring for house holders to have neighbours they can trust, this alone cannot substitute home security measures. Common mistakes such as leaving the doors unlocked and window open could invite thieves, putting your possessions at risk. And with a quarter of homeowners with no content insurance this can be very concerning.
