A great guide from Locks Online, breaking down the new technology, Smart Homes – The latest security for any home. How will having a ‘smart home’ affect you?
The words ‘Smart home’ may seem daunting to most but don’t be put off with the amazing new home technology. From controlling your heating to locking your front door at night, Locks Online are taking a dive into the latest technology for any home!
So what is a Smart Home? It basically says it in the title. The words ‘Smart home’ are adapted to a house or a small commercial business that uses a wireless protocol to control all electrical appliances in the property. Smart home has been around for a few years as you probably know, with LED Lighting mostly dominating this industry. Giving you the option to control an electrical appliance from your phone or tablet, being part of the smart home automation lifestyle has great advantages. For ease of use, comfort, efficiency and convenience, the practical smart home system allows you to control 1 to 250+ appliances with a few clicks of a button. The industry however has now opened up its doors for the use of high security systems and locking solutions for doors. With many manufactures leaking out into the smart home industry now, a smart locking solution is high up there when it comes to modern day technology. But how does it all work? Let me explain...
So to start with you will need to have a hub, or the ‘brain’ of the operation. More often or not, those who are looking for a smart locking solution will already have this hub. One great thing about starting up a smart home is that you can keep adding to the system, therefore you won’t have to make an expensive payout at the beginning. If you have not got the hub already, don’t panic. Some great hub manufacturers are SmartThings Hub, Lutron Smart Bridge and the Staples connect hub. These ones seem to be some of the most popular. It is important to shop around to a hub that will suit you and your needs. For instance, if you’re looking to expand your automation system at home, it would be pointless to get a hub that can only fit up to 10 appliances. You will also need to figure out if you would prefer to work on a Zigbee or Zwave network however, Zwave seems to be the most popular and the network with the most appliances. You need to make sure your hub carries the right network as this will determine whether they will work together or not.
Once you have your hub, you will need to download the app onto your phone or tablet to ensure you have the controls ‘at hand’. This app will be your control panel. Again, giving you the option to use the app on both a tablet and phone, you are able to communicate with all appliances with one click of a button. There are many different apps to choose from, again depending on your needs. If you have a large family, make sure you get an app that has a monitoring option. You will be able to see who is accessing your home whenever you need too. You can also check that if you need to pop out, your door stays locked if you have family members inside. Some apps available that have a high review rating are: SmartThings, Archos Smart Home and Nest.
