There is nothing more heartbreaking than finding out somebody has been in your home unauthorised. Not only that, they have broken in! You need to keep your family safe so why cut back on your door security and basically invite a burger in? Don’t! This guide will show you how to maximise your door security to prevent a break-in! It is important to have a 3 star rating when it comes to requirements for an external door. You can see on most locks that the British Standard Kite mark (heart with squiggly line through it) should be stamped on all high security locks. The TS 007 Standard has now started stamping locks with a small star alongside the BS Kitemark, ensuring they are stamped with a rating of 1, 2 or 3 stars. You will be please to know that ‘secured by design’ have teamed up with the Door and Hardware Federation to ensure maximum security has been tested, making sure 3 star rated external doors are protected against destructive and unauthorised openings.

The DHF advises that the lock cylinder and handles on any external door should meet the highest of standards by ensuring they meet the TS 007 3 star standard. There are 5 types of attacks that the hardware needs to be tested against:
- Plug extraction
This sound to me like nobody is getting in without a key! It’s good to know that DHF and SBD have teamed up to make sure people are safe in their own homes! These 5 features that are tested have been chosen as these are the most common ways of an attack.
So how can you get a 3 star rating for your external door?
It’s quite easy once you get the idea. The TS 007 works on a mix and match rule so you have a few options to choose from such as:
1 star cylinder + 2 star handle or
3 star cylinder with normal spec handle
So you can mix your hardware up to make sure you achieve that all important 3 star rating! This gives anybody the opportunity to be flexible so you’re not restricted to just the 1 option. Here I explain the different types of locks and hardware you can have to achieve this standard, and what standards each individual part needs.
* 1 Start Rating - For a cylinder to achieve this rating it must meet the cylinder security requirements of BS 3621:2007 and meet certain minimum requirements of BS 1303:2005
** 2 Star Rating - For security hardware to receive a 2 star rating, the protection offered by the hardware to the cylinder is tested in a manner equivalent to the PAS24 Cylinder test. In addition, where possible, the hardware's durability and corrosion resistance are tested in accordance with the handle standard BS EN 1906:2012
*** 3 Star Rating - For a cylinder to receive 3 stars, it must meet the requirements of a one star cylinder and also withstand an attack similar to the PAS24 cylinder test, without the benefit of any protective hardware.
Who supports this new standard?
- Association of Building Engineers
- Association of chief police officers/crime prevention incentives/secured by design

- Exova warrington

The great thing about the 3 star rating solution is, that any manufacturer of cylinders and door handles or hardware must carry a third party certification, if they are claiming their products are of the TS 007 Standard. This is because the TS 007 Employs human testing and certification ensures a reasonable and consistent result.
Below is an example of a cylinder that is in association with the TS 007 Standard. This will help you get an idea of what type of cylinders
and hardware you will need to get the 3 star rating.
Here are some examples of some 2 star rated handles we do. Using both the Cylinder above and one of these handles below, you can achieve a 3 star rating which will fulfill the TS 007 Standard.
