Who are Simons Voss and what is access control? (Video Below)
Simons Voss are a German based company who were established in 1995. They design and manufacture access control solutions. Between 1995 and 1997 Simons Voss focused on producing low-energy electronic modules and released their first product in 1997; a wireless electronic lock. Their breakthrough came in 1998 when they created the World's first wireless digital locking cylinder which created the foundations for what they have today. Since their success in 1998 Simons Voss have grown into a global company and offer their access control solutions to a huge marketplace.
Active and Passive Technology
First of all, I need to explain that Simons Voss products are broken down into two types of technology; Active technology, meaning the cylinders are controlled by fobs, similar to your car key and Passive technology, such as credential cards that you tap against the lock to open it. Active technology is useful for smaller access control systems, for example in your home and the reason being is that you would have more of a rugged key fob to access your home. The passive technology would be ideal for large access control systems, credential cards could be given to employees and restricted access to certain locks could be enforced.
Wireless Digital Cylinders
The first real success for Simons Voss was when they created the world's first wireless digital cylinder and they created the foundations of what they have today. The new wireless digital cylinder from Simons Voss is elegant and well built and the technology inside is excellent. One of the best things about the Simons Voss cylinders is that they are completely wire free and the battery life is phenomenal. The battery life is nothing short of amazing, Simons Voss have really understood what the consumer wants, the battery can last for up to 300,000 activations before it needs to be replaced. If you put this into real terms then with 10-15 activations per day, that
means the battery can last up to 5 years! It also only takes seconds to replace the battery, meaning it is something that you would never have to worry about. The cylinders are also really easy to install, with no power supply needed it makes for a fast installation. Using the purpose built tool that comes with the cylinder, it only takes one turn of that to remove the head of the cylinder, allowing you to push it through the door and replace the head of the cylinder. The cylinders also have the option of having audited trail, this means you can tell who has opened the lock, when and what time and the lock can store up to 3000 logs on a roll-on, roll-off basis (once a new log is created then the oldest log gets removed). The audited trail provides an invaluable tool for businesses looking to keep a close eye on security and needs something as comprehensive as the audited trail. With the Simons Voss cylinders you have the option to add, edit or remove people from having access, meaning that you have full control of who has access and to which parts of your property. One person could just get through the front door but no further and then somebody else could get through the front door and into the offices. The Simon Voss cylinders can come as standalone locks or networked. Standalone locks are exactly what they say they are, they do not network with any other lock or any other system. The networked lock means that are your locks are permanently connected to a central administration system, if rights are changed, an ID has been lost or a device signals a problem, then it can all be managed immediately. If you purchase a Simons Voss cylinder that isn't networked then you can upgrade your cylinder to networked with a network nodule cap.
Pin Code Access
As well as having transponders, key fobs and credential cards, it is also possible to use a Simons Voss keypad. It works in a similar way to the transponder, it sits next to the door and once the correct key combination has been entered it will send a signal to the cylinder to allow access. The keypad is totally wireless so it can be installed by anybody. The keypad is built to look great alongside the Simons Voss cylinders with its brushed steel finish.
Simons Voss have also engineered their cylinder into a fantastic looking door handle that cradles all of their technology. The Simons Voss handle comes with the option of having passive or active technology depending on your preferences, the option to have both is available but may not be cost effective. The handle has a revolutionary way of being installed, it's call a snap-in fit. This means that no extra holes are drilled into your door to accommodate the new handle as they use the pre-existing holes. The cylinder in the handle simply fits into where the cylinder should go and then the spindle goes into the pre-existing hole, then a single screw is placed into the middle of the handle and secures it tight, this gives the handle a very secure fit.
Simons Voss knows that sometimes your need to have padlocks as part of your access control system. This is why they have manufactured their wireless euro profile cylinder into a padlock. Audited trail comes as standard on the padlock unlike the other devices where you have to specify it as a requirement, the padlock can also store 3000 history logs on a roll-on, roll-off basis. The great thing about a padlock with audited trail means that you can give access to your garden shed, workshop etc to who ever you like and you know who has had access and when they had access. The padlock is IP66 rated meaning it can be used on outside applications. The actual built quality of the padlock is rugged, the shackle diameter is 8mm thick giving you a secure solution to access control. If you want to find out more about the Simons Voss product range then you can watch the video below of the LocksOnline tech team leader, Darrel.
